Write your first SAP ABAP program, from zero to a complete exercise.
Much of the SAP standard is written in ABAP, and you may never have written a line of it. In 24 short lessons, you create your program, run it and understand what it does.
- 1 Your first program
- 2 Variables, calculations and the debugger
- 3 IF, CASE and loops
- 4 Dumps and messages
- 5 SELECT, modules and the final exercise
ABAP is in your system, but you have never written a line.
SAP customers and partners write their own programs in ABAP, or use it to extend the standard. You may never write any yourself, but you run into it: in a report, in an error message, in a conversation with a developer.
A program you cannot read
Keywords, periods, declarations, function calls: without the basics, you cannot tell what even a short program does.
A dump that tells you nothing
The program stops on a screen full of technical terms. With no reference points, you do not know where to start.
Talking past the developers
You describe a need, they talk variables and loops. A few basics are enough to better understand what your system does, and to be better understood.
This micro-training has you write real programs in an SAP system, one concept at a time.
Each concept is shown on screen, then reused in the final exercise, with its commented solution.
Six things you will be able to do in the system.
You do not become a full-time ABAP developer, but you can read a small program, write a short one and follow what it does.
Create your program
A package, a transport request, an executable program: you create it in SE80, check it, activate it and run it.
Let the user enter data
A selection screen with PARAMETERS, readable labels and their translation: the user types, your program displays.
Calculate, decide, repeat
Variables and types, calculations, character strings, IF, CASE, AND, OR, DO and WHILE loops: your program chooses and repeats depending on what it receives.
Follow your code in the debugger
Single step, breakpoint, watchpoint: you watch variables change value line after line, including in a standard SAP program.
Read a dump, talk to the user
You trigger a dump, read it in ST22 and fix it. Then you send error and information messages with a message class.
Read the database, reuse code
A SELECT SINGLE on a table found in SE84, a function module call, and a first look at subroutines and methods.
We would rather tell you honestly who it is for, and who it is not for.
This is an introductory course. Check that it matches what you are looking for before you click.
This micro-training is for you if…
- You are an SAP consultant, whatever your module, and want to read and understand a small ABAP program.
- You are an SAP project manager and want to talk code with the developers.
- You are a key user and want to understand what your system does.
- You are changing careers and have never coded: the course starts from zero.
- You would rather write your first program in a real system than read theory.
This micro-training is not for you if…
- You already master ABAP: you will find nothing new here.
- You have no access to an SAP system where you are allowed to develop: the course shows everything on screen, but no system is provided.
- You want to become a developer: internal tables, object-oriented programming and SELECT over several rows are not covered.
- You want a complete SAP path, beyond ABAP: look at the Expert Training Center instead.
Eight chapters, twenty-four lessons, from the first program to the final exercise.
Twenty-two lessons open with a short video; the other two are text only. Each lesson includes illustrated text (menu paths, code, tables, diagrams) and ends with a three-question quiz.
The goal of this micro-training
Take you from a system where you have never written a line to a small complete program, written, run and debugged by you. Internal tables and object-oriented programming are not covered here.
01 Introduction 2 lessons · 2 min +
02 First program 5 lessons · 53 min +
03 Code and debugging 6 lessons · 60 min +
04 Control structures 4 lessons · 24 min +
05 Runtime errors 2 lessons · 21 min +
06 Going further 2 lessons · 9 min +
07 Final exercise 2 lessons · 8 min +
08 Conclusion 1 lesson +
Three simple principles, applied to every lesson.
You watch, then you write
The video shows each program in a real SAP system. The text below goes over the menu paths, the code and the values from the video, so you can redo the program yourself without scrubbing back.
The blockers are covered
A parameter name rejected by the syntax check, a forgotten period, a dump: the blockers you will run into are described, with what to check.
You check what you understood
Three questions at the end of each lesson. You know right away whether you can move on, or whether a point is worth another look.
Michael guides you from the first program to the final exercise.

Michael has been an SAP Logistics consultant since 2022, in-house at Ceratizit. Before becoming a consultant, he was a key user on an SAP implementation project: that is where the name Key User Training comes from.
Co-founder of Key User Training with Pierre Balbinot, he is the one you follow on screen. He writes the code in the system, one concept after another.
What our learners say about Key User Training.
A leap forward in my SAP practice
Already an SAP user across several modules for a few years, the Key User Training team really helped me take a leap forward and genuinely moved my SAP practice ahead. The professionalism and availability of the trainers are their main strengths.
Structured, progressive, concrete
Key User trainings take you by the hand. They are structured, progressive and combine theory with practice through demonstrations based on concrete situations encountered every day in companies.
Five trainings, same clear structure
Five trainings already with Key User Training. It is really the same structure whatever the course: theory and practice through concrete situations. The big plus is the responsiveness, the trainers getting back to you on questions or difficulties.
From zero to a complete program, to come back to when you need it.
You go through the course once, end to end, then come back to a concept the day you need it.
SAP ABAP micro-training
Write, run and debug your first ABAP programs, from zero to a small complete exercise.
The first program, variables, the debugger, control structures, runtime errors, reading the database and a final exercise, in short lessons you follow at your own pace.
14-day money-back guarantee
If the micro-training isn't right for you, just send us an email within 14 days of buying it. You get a full refund and you don't need to give a reason.
The nine questions to ask yourself before you sign up.
Do I need an SAP system to follow the course?
To watch the lessons, no: everything is shown on screen. To write and run the programs yourself, you need access to an SAP system where you are allowed to develop. No system comes with the micro-training.
What level do I need?
None in ABAP: the course starts from zero. It is for consultants of every module, project managers, beginners and people changing careers. If you already master ABAP, it will not teach you anything new.
Does it cover all of ABAP?
No, it is an introduction. You write short programs, read a short dump, run a SELECT SINGLE and call a function module. Internal tables, object-oriented programming and SELECT over several rows are not part of it.
How long does it take to finish?
The 22 videos add up to 2 h 56, about 3 hours. Plan for more with the texts, the quizzes and the time to redo each program in your system, especially the final exercise. You go at your own pace.
Is the course available in French?
Yes. This page is for the English version: English voice with English subtitles. The French version has its own page, on the French site.
How long do I have access?
For life. You can come back to a lesson the day you need it. Access covers the course content, not an SAP system.
Can I ask a question while I follow the course?
Yes, by email: just reply to the email that gives you access. This micro-training includes no live session and no one-to-one coaching.
What if the course isn't right for me?
You have a 14-day money-back guarantee, counted from the day you buy. A simple email is enough, no justification required, and we refund you in full.
Can I get an invoice for my company?
Yes. Key User Training is a training company based in Luxembourg. Just email us after you pay and we will send you an invoice in your company's name. If you need a specific reference on it (such as a purchase order number), write to us before you buy.
